COUNCIL REQUIREMENTS FOR DOGS

Registration and Microchipping

You are required by law to register your dog each year with Auckland Council. The registration year is the period commencing from the 1st day of July and ending the 30th of June the following year.

Application for registering a new puppy must be made before he/she is three months of age, and the puppy will need to be microchipped within two months of registration. Any adult dog not previously registered in New Zealand will also need to be microchipped.

We are able to microchip your dog here at the clinic. Puppies can be microchipped at the time of desexing while they are under anaesthesia, or earlier using local anaesthetic.

We provide you with a microchipping certificate to take to your local council where your dog will be registered with the council.  For an extra $20.50 your dog can be registered on the Companion Animal Register, allowing identification of your dog anywhere in New Zealand.  For more information go to

                                      Dog Control

Council by-laws specify that owners are responsible for controlling their dogs. This includes using or carrying a leash when taking your dog out in public and picking up its droppings.
