Why Microchip?
Why should I get my pet microchipped?

If you get a dog then registration laws require you to get your dog microchipped.   If your dog was registered before these laws came into effect then legally you do not have to microchip your dog, but it is still a good idea to do so.  Microchip numbers and owner details are kept by Auckland Council and enable a dog lost in Auckland to be linked with its owner.

Cats, rabbits and other pets should also be microchipped for identification.  The main reason is if your pet is lost or injured, then any vet, SPCA or animal control agency can scan them and contact you.  Even if your pet has not survived, at least you will know what happened to them.

Contact details for these pets are kept on the NZ Companion Animal Register (NZCAR).  It is also a good idea to register your dog with NZCAR, which enables tracing of animals nationally within New Zealand.
What is the Companion Animal Register?
What is the Companion Animal Register?

The Companion Animal Register is an animal recovery database set up by the SPCA, the NZ Companion Animal Council, NZ Veterinary Association, NZVA Companion Animal Society, NZ Kennel Club and NZ Cat Fancy Inc.

The New Zealand Companion Animal Register was set up especially to enable the recovery of lost pets. Anyone can check if an animal's microchip number is on the database and agencies involved with lost pets can search for that animal's owners. Any profits are used to help animals particularly in the area of animal welfare.

Once your pet has been registered, your e-mail address will give you 24 hour access to this register via their website.  Alternatively, if you prefer to talk to a real person you can ring them on 0800 LOSTPET between the hours of 8am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
Does it Hurt?

Does the microchip hurt?

The microchip is only about the size of a grain of rice, but has to be inserted using a large needle. We use local anaesthetic so that it doesn't hurt, and the small hole heals very quickly.

It may be a bit tender for a day or so but after this you should be able to give your pet cuddles and neck-rubs without you or your pet noticing the chip's presence.

There is no after-care required.

How Much Does Microchipping Cost?
How much will it cost? Are there any on-going expenses such as registration?

We charge $61.20 to microchip your pet.  This includes the cost of the chip, insertion proceedure and certification for Auckland Council.

For an additional $20.50 we will register your pet with the New Zealand Companion Animal Registry.  This is a one-off fee and covers your pet for life.  If you move or change your contact details there are no further fees if you change your details on-line.  You will need to register an e-mail address to be able to do this.
